IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. (HQ: Tokyo, Japan, CEO: Koji Yahagi, hereafter referred to as “IPS”), a group company of IHI Corporation (HQ: Tokyo, Japan, CEO: Hiroshi Ide, hereafter referred to as “IHI”) has delivered 8X52DF dual fuel engine for the next-generation environment-friendly pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) ordered by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (HQ: Tokyo, Japan, CEO: Hitoshi Nagasawa, hereafter referred to as “NYK”) to Shin-Kurushima Dockyard Co., Ltd. (HQ: Tokyo, Japan, CEO: Tetsushi Soga, hereafter referred to as “Shin-Kurushima”) and she was in service.

This vessel is one of the largest PCTC in the world that can transport about 7,000 vehicles (converted to standard size vehicles), and was named "SAKURA LEADER" after the cherry blossoms that symbolize flower in Japan.

IMO (International Maritime Organization) has set a goal of halving the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of international shipping by 2050. The practical application of LNG, which has a low environmental load, has already begun as one of the useful method for decreasing carbon in fuel in Japan.

Under these circumstances, NYK is promoting the conversion to next-generation environment-friendly PCTC, such as ordering the second LNG-fueled PCTC from Shin-Kurushima.

IPS’s X-DF engine applies a low-pressure gas injection system, which not only provides high safety, but reduces the cost of fuel gas supply system. In addition, X-DF engine has excellent environmental performance, such as being able to compliance with the IMO nitrogen oxide (NOx) regulation without any additional equipment, regardless of whether it is inside or outside the emission control area (ECA). Technology of X-DF engine is highly evaluated in the world. The X-DF dual fuel engine is certified an Environmentally Friendly Products Certification Program on the IHI Group's (IHI Group products and services that meet a certain standard and evaluated in five categories: energy saving, greenhouse gas reduction, resource saving, environmental risk reduction, and biodiversity conservation).

IPS will continue to provide customers with the X-DF dual fuel engine, which implement low carbonization of fuel, and contributes to the reduction of environmental load, which is a serious social issue, to realize a sustainable society.
