MAN 175D Selected for First IMO Tier III-Compliant Harbour Tug Designed for Operation in Mediterranean

MAN Energy Solutions has won the contract to supply the engines for a new harbour tug in Spain. P&O Reyser will operate the 27-metre newbuild, 75T bollard-pull-rated Asymmetric Tractor Tug (ATT) in the Port of Barcelona, which is expected to enter service from mid-2020.

The vessel will feature 2 × MAN 12V175D MM, IMO Tier III engines, each rated at 2,220 kWm. The engines will be connected to FPP azimuth thrusters for propulsion, whilst also providing power to support on-board towing and fire-fighting capabilities. The engines will be supplied in accordance with Lloyds Register Society classification rules.

Lex Nijsen, Head of Four-Stroke Marine Sales, MAN Energy Solutions said: “The MAN 175D is experiencing a growing number of references within different segments and I’m pleased that we have won the trust of such a key marine segment. In this particular instance, our propulsion package was chosen because of its compact footprint, fuel-efficient performance and the flexible design approach taken with the SCR layout. Winning this order also fits well with our intention to increasingly become a supplier of complete propulsion solutions.”

The engines, along with the associated SCR exhaust-gas emissions-after-treatment system, will be supplied to Drydocks World-Dubai shipyard, who are undertaking the vessel construction, direct from MAN Energy Solutions’ new MAN 175D production facility, located in Frederikshavn, Denmark.

“This is an important project for P&O Reyser, P&O Maritime and Drydocks World Dubai’s combined resources and our decision and confidence in selecting MAN Energy Solutions is integral with our vision of Maritime Excellence,” said Rado Antolovic, CEO & MD of the Maritime Services Division of DP World.

This will be the first IMO Tier III-compliant Harbour Tug for P&O Maritime, and also the first harbour tug for operation in the Mediterranean area complying with IMO Tier III, MARPOL Annex VI.

“MAN Energy Solutions and P&O Maritime have worked together for the last two years in order to achieve a state of the art tug complying with the most strict environmental requirements for deployment in the Port of Barcelona,” said Iñigo Garcia, Managing Director of P&O Reyser.

Cintranaval, a top Spanish ship design office, has also been a key player in this process offering their expertise from up to 300 tugboats and offshore vessels designed over more than 50 years.
